I’m sure you’ve heard of the phrase ‘a dog is for life, not just for Christmas’, but sadly at this time of the year, hundreds of pets are gifted to people for Christmas, and shortly afterwards, get abandoned or given up. All of these animals are taken out of their brand new homes and left because owners either get bored or can’t look after them properly, and this means that they are in desperate need of your help. They need to find a new loving home, and with all sorts of charities and adoption centres set up, this is possible.

There are many ways you can help abandoned pets, and we’ve listed a few below so that you can contribute this Christmas.

Adoption is better

We always encourage adopting pets rather than buying them from a pet shop. This is where all abandoned animals are left and looking to be rehomed, and you can help give an animal a brand new and happy life. Some of these animals have come from abusive homes and deserve a happy home with loving owners. Hundreds of pets are abandoned every single day, and after Christmas the sad reality is that these numbers become even higher. However, you can save an animal from a lifetime of loneliness and sadness. Furthermore, even if you are not in a position to adopt an animal yourself, you can encourage anyone you know that is looking to get a pet, to do so.

Donate to charity

Another way that you can really help abandoned animals over Christmas is by donating to charities. There are some amazing charities such as the RSPCA with selfless volunteers working to rescue abandoned animals. All money donated to such charities is a huge help as it pays towards the care and treatment of these animals and helps in finding them a new home. Without their help and your kind donations, thousands of animals would be left uncared for and without help.

Donations don’t have to be in the form of money, either. If you can buy things like blankets, toys, food – any kind of donation like this is a huge help to these charities.

Volunteer at a shelter

Shortly after Christmas when all of the abandoned pets are brought into shelters, any help makes a huge difference. Something you could do to make a difference would be to volunteer at a local shelter. This would involve caring for abandoned animals and rehabilitating them ready to be rehomed. All volunteers at these types of places are incredibly selfless, and any extra help you can give would be very much appreciated. You don’t have to commit to anything you can’t do – even if you just went in and helped for a couple of hours a week. These animals need your financial help, and this would be the perfect way to offer it after Christmas.
