Here at Hollybank Cattery & Kennels, we strongly believe that a house isn’t a home without a pet. Our little furry companions make our home a better place, and we would certainly be lost without them. Having a pet can actually improve your health amongst a whole lot of other benefits, such as having a lifelong friend and bonding the family together.

At some point in your life, you should feel the love of owning a pet, which is why we wanted to talk about a few ways that they touch our lives and why they are the perfect addition to the family.

It’s great for the kids

We don’t think that a family is complete without a pet. One particular part of the family that can really benefit from having an animal in the house, are children. It can really help them to become more advanced and confident, and teach them some key skills early on in life. For example, looking after a pet is a responsibility, and this is really valuable throughout all stages of life. Owning a pet also helps children with their social skills. Whether it’s going out to play with them or partaking in things such as shows and competitions, this can really help children to become more socially able. Finally, like there are with adults, owning a pet provides health benefits to children, too. It increases the amount of exercise they do daily which will keep them fit and healthy.

You’ll always have someone to talk to

The great thing about pets, is that they will always be there for you. If you need a good listener, they definitely tick the box. Pets are known for reducing stress – if you are going through a bad time or are feeling down, spending time with them is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety and boost positivity.

It’s good for your health!

Having a pet is proven to be good for both mental and physical health. It can be really great for the mind, especially when feeling down or lonely, but there are significant physical benefits also. It is scientifically proven that pet owners have healthier hearts than non pet owners, with lower blood pressure and heart rates. If you have a dog for example, walking it every day means more exercise, hence why heart rates are lower and owners become sick less often.

In terms of mental health, interacting with animals is known to lift a persons mood. This can help if you are feeling anxious or depressed, and be a release for your mind. Living with a pet can often prevent loneliness and sadness.

They make it a happier environment

Pets are incredibly loving, and you as their owner, mean everything to them. They are always happy to see you, especially dogs! Other pets such as cats may not show it all the time, but they really do love bonding with their owners. The bond you have with pets is like no other and they are always there to make you feel happy, which is great for boosting positivity and self-esteem.
